Chapter Ten
Wednesday, September 11th.
Wild Stallion Ranch.
I could tell Dad still had a headache when he sat down at the table with a black coffee in front of him. He was staring into his mug, not saying anything.
âWhatâs going on with Olivia? Are you guys giving it another shot?â
âIâm not giving anybody another shot. Not ever. All I do is screw it up and hurt people and Iâm not going that route again.â
âOkeydokey,â said Virgil. âFrom now on, no commitments for the super stud in our family.â
âShut up, Virge. Shove those eggs in your mouth.â
We all laughed. Even Billy.
Sheriffâs Office. Coyote Creek.
Travis called our first ever staff meeting when we got to the station. We gathered around Mollyâs desk in the squad room so sheâd be included. She couldnât run off and abandon the front desk or the phone.
âWe have Trevor Oliver in custody, and before his arraignment, I want to make sure we have both Harlanâs and Tammyâs reports filed, stating they heard Trevor and Alison confess to the murders.â
âThe reports are filed,â said Molly, âbut I donât think a police report carries the same weight with a judge or the DAâs office as a signed confession.â
âAgreed, but a solid reason to make the arrests, all the same. Iâll brace Trevor in his cell to see if I can get him to open up a bit about his sister-in-law.â
âMister Oliver has already requested a phone call,â said Molly.
âYeah, he can make a call right after I book him.â Travis turned and pointed, âTed and Virge, I want the two of yâall to go to Linda Tuckerâs house in Cut Bank and see if she can give you a description of the guys who raped her. Her memory has to be coming back soon. We need more information from her if she can give it.â
âThat poor woman,â said Molly. âWhat sheâs been through, I wouldnât wish on anybody.â
âYeah,â said Travis. âOne of the worst crimes this office has ever tried to solve.â
In the run, I leaned on the wall and listened while Dad talked to Trevor Oliver. He started off nice and friendly to catch him off guard.
âMister Oliver, Iâm going to book you this morning and charge you with four murders. When you go to trial, it would go a lot better for you if the judge was aware you gave me a hand apprehending your accomplice, Alison Oliver.â
Oliver got up off his bunk acting like a big shot and that put me a bit on edge. It was always a bad idea to take a stance in front of my dad.
âThe only person Iâll be talking to is my lawyer and Iâd appreciate my phone call. I know my rights.â
âAnd I know mine,â said Travis. âRight after youâre booked, Iâll see that you get close to a phone.â
Travis cuffed Trevor none too gently and led him out of his cell. I followed them out of the run to the booking area close to the back of the building.
âYou go ahead and get started, Harlan.
